A liner is three decisions

Liners for sewer lines in Denver, Colorado are described in a lot of brand names, but every one of them comes down to three choices: the tube, the resin, and the cure. The tube gives the liner its shape and carries the resin. The resin, once hardened, gives the liner its strength and chemical resistance. The cure is how the resin is hardened in place. A contractor who can tell you which of each they are using, and why, understands the product. One who can only name a brand may not.

The tube: felt or fiberglass

Needled felt is the original cured-in-place material: a polyester felt tube with a plastic coating on one side that holds the resin in during installation. It is flexible, forgiving of bends and diameter changes, and is inverted with air or water pressure or pulled into place. It has decades of service history in residential and municipal pipe. Fiberglass-reinforced tubes are stiffer and stronger per unit thickness, which lets a thinner liner carry the same load and reduces the loss of inside diameter. They are usually pulled into place and cured with ultraviolet light. Both are legitimate; the choice depends on the pipe and the installer's equipment. For a lateral with several bends, felt often fits better; for a straight main where capacity matters, fiberglass has an advantage.

The resin: polyester, vinyl ester or epoxy

  • Polyester is the workhorse for sanitary and storm service: economical, well understood, and adequate for ordinary domestic wastewater. It shrinks slightly on cure, which is why the liner is designed as a close fit rather than a bonded one.
  • Vinyl ester resists heat, acids and many solvents, and is specified for industrial and some commercial lines, and for pipe carrying hot discharge such as commercial dishwashing.
  • Epoxy shrinks less, bonds more readily to the host pipe, and is common in small-diameter lateral liners, pull-in-place systems and sectional point repairs. It has a longer working time and is usually cured at ambient temperature or with warm water.

Whatever the resin, it is mixed with a hardener on site or at a wet-out facility and impregnated into the tube under vacuum or by rolling. From that point the clock is running: the liner must be installed and the cure started before the resin begins to set on its own. The cure: hot water, steam or UV

Hot water is circulated through the inflated liner for a few hours and then cooled slowly; it is gentle and even, and suits felt liners in laterals and mains. Ultraviolet light cures fiberglass liners with a light train pulled through the tube; it is fast, uses no water, and produces a very consistent cure, but it needs a straight enough pipe for the light train to travel. Too thin and the liner can buckle under groundwater pressure after installation; too thick and it wastes resin and reduces capacity. Lateral liners, sectional liners and lateral seals

A lateral connection seal is a hat-shaped liner that seals the junction where a house lateral meets a lined main, closing the gap that lining alone leaves at the connection. Cleaning to bare wall, correct resin mixing and wet-out, tight inflation with no wrinkles, a complete cure, and accurate reinstatement of connections are all crew skills rather than product features.
