Sewer pipe sleeving in Denver, Colorado is what many homeowners call the process the trade calls cured-in-place pipe lining. The word sleeve is a good description: a flexible tube is placed inside the damaged sewer, expanded against the wall and hardened, so the old pipe ends up wearing a new, seamless sleeve along its full length or just over the damaged part. The sleeve is the pipe from then on. The old clay, cast iron or concrete around it is just the form it was shaped in. Whichever word a contractor uses, the materials and the standard the work is done to are the same.

What the sleeve is made of

  • The tube. Needled polyester felt, fiberglass, or a combination, with a coating on one side to hold the resin in and give the finished surface a smooth bore. Thickness is chosen from the pipe diameter, depth and condition.
  • The resin. Polyester, vinyl ester or epoxy, saturated into the felt before installation. Epoxy is common in small-diameter laterals for its bond and low shrinkage; vinyl ester is chosen where chemical resistance matters; polyester is the workhorse for larger mains.
  • The cure. Heat from circulating water or steam, ultraviolet light for glass-reinforced tubes, or simply time at ambient temperature with a resin formulated for it.

Once cured, the sleeve is a rigid, jointless thermoset pipe with a design life generally stated by manufacturers at around fifty years and a wall strong enough to carry soil and traffic loads without help from the host.

Full-length sleeve

A full-length sleeve runs from the access point, usually a cleanout at the building, to the connection at the main. The saturated tube is inverted into the pipe with air or water pressure so that the resin side turns outward against the wall, or it is pulled into place and then inflated with a bladder. Pressure holds it against the wall through the cure. Afterward the bladder is removed, the ends are trimmed flush, and any branch connection inside the run is reopened with a cutter. The result is one continuous pipe that has covered every joint, crack and root entry along the way. Sectional sleeve

A sectional sleeve, also called a point repair or spot repair, is a short piece, commonly two to six feet, used when the camera finds one defect in an otherwise sound pipe. It cannot be used across a branch connection, a sharp bend or a badly offset joint, and it does nothing for the rest of the pipe. The sleeve reduces the bore slightly and improves the flow anyway.
